The 14-year-old was not injured; the three children in the other car were not reported to have suffered any injuries either.

Fatal auto accidents linked to cellphones may be underreported

The number of fatal car crashes caused by distracted driving in Wisconsin and across the country may be much higher than originally thought. The National Safety Council, an advocacy group, recently released its findings from a study of state and federal data on auto accidents from 2009 to 2011. The group found that out of 180 car crashes in which there was strong evidence that the driver had been using a cell phone, less than half were recorded in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's database as having involved a cellphone.

Future of Wisconsin intersection unclear after several accidents

An intersection in the town of Brussels is getting plenty of attention these days, and it was even set to be discussed at the April 4 Door County Highway Safety Commission meeting. After more than 20 vehicular accidents occurred at the junction over a span of just five years, many are starting to think the intersection of County C and Wisconsin 57 is simply accident-prone. Set to appear at the meeting was an engineer from the state's Department of Safety. The possibility of making "J-intersections" at the intersection was on the table as an option. These "intersections" would have drivers go past the physical intersection and then loop back around to get to their destination. One Brussels Town board member said that this option could actually make the problem worse, however, for semi-trucks and vehicles with large cargo.

Wisconsin car crash results in injuries to both drivers

In Mukwa, Wis., two drivers were rushed to the hospital after their cars collided on Wisconsin Highway 54. The Waupaca County Sheriff's Department reports that a 51-year-old woman was exiting a private driveway and attempting to cross the highway when she lost control of her SUV. The accident occurred when a 66-year-old man traveling eastbound on the highway swerved to attempt to avoid colliding with the SUV. However, his vehicle ultimately collided with the driver's side of the SUV, which ejected the woman from her vehicle.

Two-car accident sends two people to the hospital

On Feb. 28, a two-vehicle accident in Whitefish Bay resulted in two adults being transported to a local hospital with injuries. The auto accident took place during the afternoon near the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Birch Avenue. According to a Whitefish Bay police sergeant, the incident occurred when a vehicle traveling north on Santa Monica did not yield to a vehicle traveling southbound in the oncoming lane as it was turning onto Birch. This caused the vehicle that was traveling southbound to hit a tree on a residential property. Both drivers sustained injuries that required treatment at a local hospital, but the injuries were reported to be life-threatening.

Inclement weather leads to one fatality and 26-vehicle crash

On Feb. 19, ice, snow and gusting winds led to poor driving conditions and scores of accidents, including a 26-vehicle crash, in Winnebago County. Most of the auto accidents involved only minor injuries, but one of them resulted in a fatality. In that early morning crash on State 26 in Nekimi, a box truck driver headed north lost control and struck a sedan traveling south. The sedan driver died at the scene, and the truck driver reported no injuries. The local sheriff's lieutenant cited snow blowing off the nearby lake as the most likely cause for the 26-car pileup, which occurred on U.S. 41 north at the Lake Butte des Morts bridge. Three individuals involved in the accident were taken by rescue workers to the hospital. None of them suffered life-threatening injuries.
