3 ways to prepare for a new year divorce

January is a popular time to get a divorce. This is because the new year is a time of new chances and leaving bad things behind. If your marriage is going through some trouble and you are considering getting a divorce in the new year, you are not alone. According to Forbes, many people get a divorce in January for fresh starts after the holidays

But you should not jump right into it without doing some careful thinking and preparation. If you make a reactionary decision before you are actually ready, the divorce could be particularly troubling and toxic. Here are some steps you should take to get ready for a divorce in the new year.

1. Save money

With the holiday shopping behind you, it is time to save up because divorce can get expensive. Along with putting money aside, you should open a personal bank account, close joint accounts and reduce unnecessary spending. This will help you handle any attorney fees and prepare you for living on a single income.

2. Assemble essential documents

You will need a variety of documents during your divorce proceedings to prove your income, property and debts. These documents are used to determine property division and any support payments. Documents may include:

  • Tax returns
  • Paystubs
  • Mortgages
  • Deeds
  • Vehicle titles
  • Wills
  • Investment records

Organize these papers now and make copies so you do not have to go through any extra stress once the proceedings begin.

3. Get ready for a child custody dispute

If you have children, you should prepare to prove why you deserve custody. Gather any records of parent-teacher conferences or school events to prove you are an active parent. You should also obtain documentation of any medical bills you pay for your kids.

Getting a divorce is never easy, but sometimes it needs to happen. Follow these steps to prepare yourself for officially ending your marriage.
